Before Tommy Hilfiger, There Was Saint James!
In 1889, the nautical sweater look was originally created for fishermen in Normandy, France by then-Mayor Leon Legallais.
Fisherman sweaters were made of high-quality wool so that Sailors can endure and move through harsh weather conditions.
Why Stripes?
It is said that the stripe pattern makes it easy to spot fishermen if they fell into the sea.
Thus, the striped shirt became the official uniform for all French Seamen through the 1858 Act of France.
Throughout the years, the sailor look took upon a life of its own in men's and women’s fashion and becoming popular through brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica.
Today, most of all Saint James clothing is still perfectly designed with sailor stripes. Saint James also continues to use pure wool along with pure cotton material to make all of their garments.
